  1. README file for The Menu Construction Set

  3. Installation Instructions
  4.  
  5. Insert Installation Disk 1 into a floppy drive and then type:
  6.  
  7.                     A:       (or B: if you inserted the diskette into Drive B)
  8.                     INSTALL
  9.  
  10. The installation program will ask you for the name of the directory that you
  11. would like to install MCS to.  Then the program will ask you to insert 
  12. Installation Disk 2.  Older versions of MCS came on three disks, new versions
  13. come on only two diskettes.

  15. Install creates two batch files which should always be used to access The
  16. Menu Construction Set.  MCS.BAT and MENU.BAT are placed in the root directory
  17. of the installation drive.  These batch files can be moved to any directory
  18. that is in your PATH.
  19.  
  20. MCS.BAT  - Runs the menu authoring environment (i.e. the menu editor)
  21. MENU.BAT - Runs menus that were created by the menu editor
  22.  
  23. Install copies the following files to the installation directory:

  25. MCS.DOC      - On-disk documentation - also contains the order form
  26. MCS.TXT      - Opening screen used when you type MCS
  27. MENU.TXT     - Opening screen used when you type MENU
  28. MCS_EDIT.EXE - Editor program - when you type MCS, this program is executed
  29. MCS_RUN.EXE  - Run program - when you type MENU, this program is executed
  30. RECONFIG.DOC - Information about Reconfig, the DOS Configuration Manager

  32. You will also notice two subdirectories, EXAMPLE and DEFAULT.  Each 
  33. subdirectory contains a menu set.  The EXAMPLE menu set follows an example
  34. which is given in the (paper) manual.  The DEFAULT menu set is called the 
  35. default menu set for the following reason.  You type MENU EXAMPLE to run the
  36. EXAMPLE menu set.  However, if you just type MENU, then the DEFAULT menu set
  37. is loaded.  By the way, the authoring environment works the same way.  If you
  38. type MCS MYMENUS, you will load the MCS editor ("the authoring environment")
  39. and the MYMENUS menu set will automatically be loaded for you to edit.  But
  40. if you just type MCS, then the DEFAULT menu set will be loaded for you.

  42. Note that if you are reinstalling MCS, your existing menu sets will not be
  43. changed in any way.
